May 24, 2020EMP: Entrepreneurial Mindset Profile. What it is, what it is for and how it is measured.
Why do we talk about an Entrepreneurial Mindset? What it is, what it is for and how it is measured.
An entrepreneurial mindset is a specific aspect of entrepreneurial ability: while the latter distinguishes the ideal profile of the successful entrepreneur and includes a mix of attitudes and skills that are indispensable for those who want to ‘do business,’ an entrepreneurial approach is an element with which even a valuable Employee should be equipped in order to make a decisive contribution to the company’s business results and well-being because they feel it is to some degree ‘their own’ in any case.
In many organizations, this entrepreneurial mindset is also required to managers, particularly with regard to the ability to manage complexity, growth and innovation. Therefore, not only technical expertise, but also a resourcefulness that is essential at all levels of the organization and understood as proactivity, autonomy, perspective, and goal orientation.
Today it is possible to measure this attitude thanks to the ENTREPREUNEURIAL MINDSET PROFILE (EMP), a new scientifically validated assessment developed by a pool of psychologists who have worked in collaboration with research institutes and prestigious American colleges. The questionnaire, which can be filled out online, can examine and assess the main variables of the ‘entrepreneurial mindset’ and compare them with those of the typical entrepreneur or manager profile for an immediate benchmark.
USE AND BENEFITS
EMP offers the advantage of knowing
- Your own strengths and areas for improvement to develop a more dynamic entrepreneurial mindset
- How to accelerate innovation, fuel creativity, and improve your leadership
- To explore the correlation between entrepreneurship and economic development of the company
- To introduce a decisive change in approach that influences the whole organization by orienting it toward the future
EMP use areas
- Changing management
- Setting up new teams
- On-boarding new recruits
- Career development and guidance
- Skills analysis
- Staff selection
- Corporate welfare programs
- Generational transition
Within the organizational dynamics and development plans of companies, EMP seamlessly integrates with the use of other tools (e.g., Emotional Intelligence and Conflict Dynamic), intersecting and exploring certain critical dimensions such as personal power, goal determination, and flexibility.
PROFILE
Based on a large research sample focused on the traits, motivations and skills that identify the inclinations of the Entrepreneur and Manager who make up the two comparison groups, the ENTREPREUNEURIAL MINDSET (EMP) PROFILE offers a ‘snapshot’ of the degree of awareness with respect to feelings and behaviours of entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship.
The questionnaire investigates 14 scales, divided into two specific domains:
7 SCALES OF PERSONALITY, i.e., the personal and motivational characteristics that often differentiate people with a strong entrepreneurial mindset from those without it
7 COMPETENCE SCALES, i.e., the skills related to what a person with an entrepreneurial spirit needs to know and be able to do
14 SCALES OF THE E.M.P.
- Independence = Desire to work with a high degree of autonomy
- Preference for Limited Structure = Preference for assignments and situations involving a low level of formalization
- Nonconformity = Preference for original solutions and desire for uniqueness
- Risk Acceptance = Willingness to pursue an idea or goal even when the probability of success is low
- Action Orientation = Tendency to show initiative, follow fast decision-making processes and feel impatience with results
- Passion = Tendency to experience excitement and enjoyment in work rather than boredom and fatigue
- Need to Achieve = Desire to achieve excellence
- Future focus = Ability to imagine the future
- Idea Generation = Ability to generate numerous new ideas and come up with alternative approaches to achieve set goals
- Execution = Ability to turn ideas into action plans
- Self-Confidence = Conviction of being able to use YOUR skills and talents to achieve important goals
- Optimism = Ability to maintain a generally positive attitude regarding life and work situations
- Persistence = Ability to quickly recover from difficulties and persevere with goals
- Interpersonal Sensitivity = Level of sensitivity and attention to perceive other people’s state of well-being
FEEDBACK ON THE PROFILE
The results of the questionnaire are compiled into a report that is shared in a two-hour individual coaching session in which the coach guides the reading of the report and analyses the EMP scales with the coachee, focusing attention on the benefits and risks of behaviours that result from variables with a level that is too low or too high; stimulates reflections on the level of professional skills and personal attitudes; and supports the coachee in identifying specific personal and professional development goals.
Feedback can also take place during a group activity, with anonymously aggregated data, to compare entrepreneurship profiles among managers/staff groups, focus the analysis on priorities in terms of training needs, and identify possible team development goals.
